bloom

Seven consecutive days during the growth and first bloom of a Lithops flower bud.
See the flower in full bloom:
www.flickr.com/photos/yellowcloud/3939825873/in/set-72157...

The opening/closing of the flower seems to be sunshine-activated. Since after the first two openings there was really bad weather for days, I had to stop the time lapse because the flower did not open again and I did not want to wear out my DSLR with 144 photos a day while nothing happening in front of the lens.

10 minutes per frame, 1034 frames total, 30 frames per second in the video. Taken with a Pentax K200D in aperture priority mode (f/32). Trigger: DIY 10-minute timer circuit connected to camera remote input. Camera power supply by wallplug adapter. Nighttime illumination by desktop lamp.

Software involved in production:
Easy Graphic Converter (www.etrusoft.com)
for batch rescaling the individual jpg frames to 1280x720
JPGAvi (www.ndrw.co.uk)
for making the 1280x720 AVI video
and k-lite codec pack (www.codecguide.com/)
for the used xvid mpeg-4 codec, set to highest quality.
Original video file size 118MB:

Successful uploading this video to flickr was pain, since flickr always gives you a "Bonk!" message after you have uploaded the whole file without success, not telling whether the codec was wrong or resolution, framerate or whatever.

I took another visit to the Zilker Botanical Gardens, my first in a few years. And guess what, I ended up taking the exact same pictures of the same flowers as before.

Well, maybe not that bad. But I need to find something more interesting to photograph.

My African Violet won't bloom.?

I recently got into growing African Violets. I am 17 years old and think I am doing everything right. I tried reading how to care for them and it doesnt seem to help me. Two months ago I bought an African Violet from Walmart, and it hasn't bloomed yet. I replanted and have been fertilizing it frequently. It has plenty of sunlight, and the leaves are growing very nicely and green. All it hasn't done since I got is bloom. Could I be fertilizing it too much? It also has had babies grow on the side of the "mother plant" and I have replanted those. They are doing very nicely too but again they aren't producing blooms either.

Instead of sunlight, substitute fluorescence light. Also, only water them by putting water in a shallow dish, then setting the pot in the dish. The leaves hate to get wet.

how long does it take melons to come out of flowers.? and Flower

how long does it take melons to come out of flowers.?

i want to no because my honeydew just got flowers.

flower best answer:

Answer by Aniruddha N
3-4 days.

Please note the honeydew melons vine will have 2 types of flowers on it. Male flowers and female flowers. The female flowers can be easily distinguished from male flowers because of the ovary present at the base of the flowers. Generally only one flower comes in each notch of the leaf, So looking at the flower bud you can identify whether it is female or male. Only female flowers change into the fruit i.e. the flower will dry up and fruit below it will start developing.

Your honeydew has started flowering so the first fruit should be visible within 7-10 days.

Are the red parts of a pointsettia plant leaves or petals? and Bencomia sphaerocarpa #1

Are the red parts of a pointsettia plant leaves or petals?

The red petals/leaves look exactly like the green leaves, except red. And also, the green leaves always fall and the red petals/leaves linger for a lot longer, even if the bottom half of the pointsettia is bare. So what exactly is the red part--leaves or petals?
Sorry if this seems demanding (and if I sound like a teacher) but can answerers explain their reasoning? Tehe thanks!
Also, what makes them red? (Chlorophyll=green, ????=red?) :]
ohh...poinsettie, not "pointsettia..." heheheaa and I thought i DESERVED winning the spelling bee! obviously not! XD
darn..spelled it wrong again. but this time it was a typo.

Rosaceae - Endemic to El Hierro Island, Canary Islands (Spain); critically endangered

Bencomia

Shown: Inflorescences (in bud) emerging from pinnately compound foliage

"Bencomia is a genus of four rare plant species native to the Canary Islands, which grow as woody, branching shrubs with glossy, evergreen leaves and central, pendulous inflorescences with small flowers followed by densely packed, globular fruits. Mature heights range from 1 to 4 meters." (Wikipedia)

Named for Bencomi, the last King of Tenerife

"Bencomia sphaerocarpa is endemic to the island of El Hierro, Canary Islands, Spain (Martín Osorio et al. 2004), where it can be found on the northern side of the island, from 400 to 1,200 m asl, in three locations: Tinco, Hoya de Fileba and Tábano. Only one of them shows an acceptable degree of conservation. The presence of the species in the island of La Palma has been reported in the past, but it has not been recently confirmed.
The area of occupancy of the species has been calculated to be between 0.75 and 3 km2. Decreasing trends have been reported for the distribution of the species (Gobierno de Canarias 2004)." (eol.org/pages/636121/overview)
