Why are the night-blooming flowers white in color ? and A Night Bloom on Cactus

Why are the night-blooming flowers white in color ?

Generally, it is found that night-blooming flowers are white or less colorful. Why are they so?

bloom best answer:

Answer by Chuckney
They are less colourful because they cannot be seen so well, so colours would not attract pollinators as teh colours of daybloomers do.

I'd say they are often white because white stands out best in the dark, so is best for attracting creatures. Night bloomers such as jasmine as also quote often scented for the same reason, they rely on this rather than colour to be pollinated.

Seen early in the morning between 5:30 am and 6:15 am, the bees have already visited this night-blooming cereus flower on a cactus in my neighborhood, The previous image shows another bloom on the same cactus plant.

What does 琼花 mean in English? and Leycesteria formosa #3

What does 琼花 mean in English?

I know it's a type of flower but don't know what... =/
It's not extinct lol.
One of my relatives have this in her backyard. I don't know what's the english word for it because we use it to make tea. One of my cousins drank it and she went from around 100/100 give or take to 20/20 vision. Some chinese herb store also sells this type of flower (dry type). The reason I want to know it in English because I want to reasearch it.

"Leycesteria is a genus of flowering plants in the honeysuckle family Caprifoliaceae, native to temperate Asia in the Himalaya and southwestern China.

"It contains six or seven species of shrubs with short-lived stems with soft wood, growing to 1-2.5 m tall. One species, Leycesteria formosa (Himalayan Honeysuckle or Flowering Nutmeg), is a popular garden shrub in Britain.

"Leycesteria formosa (Himalayan Honeysuckle, Flowering Nutmeg, Himalaya Nutmeg or Pheasant Berry) is a deciduous shrub in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to the Himalaya and southwestern China.

"Leycesteria formosa...has soft, hollow, upright green stems 1-2 m tall, which only last for 2-5 years before collapsing and being replaced by new stems from the roots. The leaves are opposite, dark green, 6-18 cm long and 4-9 cm broad, with an entire or wavy margin. The flowers are produced on 5-10 cm long pendulous racemes; each flower is small, white, subtended by a purple bract. The fruit is a soft purple-black berry 1 cm diameter, eaten by birds which disperse the seeds." (Wikipedia)

Until this year I'd never even noticed that Holly trees bloom, in hind-sight this should always have been obvious, where else do the lovely red berries come from!? I think I can be forgiven for missing them though, they really are very small! I shot this photo in the Junior Gardens on the St. Patrick's College campus in Maynooth, Ireland.

This shot featured on my blog as Photo of the Week 73 - Holly in Bloom.
