How to measure how much sun your garden gets?

I am interested in starting a veggie garden, and the plants need full sun. How can I measure how much sun the area gets? I've heard of the sunstick but I was wondering if there was a free way?

"Full sun" means 8 eight hours of unobstructed sunlight. It costs you nothing to observe the presence or absence of shade.

The Sallows are a very attractive group of moths and this Centre-barred Sallow (Atethmia centrago) is the first of them I've seen this year. They're autumnal moths and blend beautifully with the yellowing and brown leaves.
