Answer by wildmistyblue
a. Example of mutualism -
1) Mycorrhizae are associations between fungi and higher roots of plants. Mycorrhiza play the role of root hairs and absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil for the plant whereas the plant provides shelter and nutrition to the fungus.
2) The female wasp uses the fruit of a certain fig species to lay eggs. In return, the wasp pollinates the fig inflorescence while searching for suitable egg-laying sites.
b. Example of parasitism -
1) Cuscuta is a parasitic plant found growing on hedge plants. It does not possess chlorophyll and cannot make its own food. Hence it derives nutrition from the host plant.
2) Malarial parasite Plasmodium completes its life cycle in two host - humans and female anopheles mosquito.
c. Example of commensalism -
1) An orchid grows as an epiphyte on a mango tree branch in which the orchid benefits whereas the mango tree is unaffected.
2) The interaction between a sea anemone and the clown fish (remember Finding Nemo ?). The clown fish gets protection from the predators which stay away from the stinging tentacles whereas the anemone does not derive any benefit from the association.
inflorescence
Artemisia frigida
The inflorescence bracts are dissected in a similar manner to the stem leaves. All flowers can produce a viable fruit and the receptacle is hairy, feature that related prairie sagewort to absinthium and alpine sagebrush.
