How do I get rid of honeysuckle blooms?

My husband loves his honeysuckle bush and has been finally gotten it to the shape he wants it after 10 years. My mom has recently moved in due to money problems and is allergic to the blooms. Is there anything I can do to make the blooms fall off without damaging the bush?

Are you sure that your mom is allergic to the honeysuckle blooms? Usually people are allergic to something else that blooms at the same time, but has inconspicuous blooms.

The reason I say this is that most plants with big blooms are looking for insects or hummingbirds to pollinate them. This means they make sticky pollen that will stick to the bees, birds, whatever to be carried to another plant. Wind pollinated plants are the ones what produce tons of light pollen to be carried by the wind to other plants. These are the ones that most people are allergic to, but you don't see big flowers because they don't need to attract bees or hummingbirds.

That said, there is an chance that your mother is allergic to the insect-attracting odor that the honeysuckle produces. If that is the case your husband's bush is out of luck. The only way to prevent it from flowering would be to pick off all the buds before they open.

I don't think there is a way to actually prevent your bush from flowering except to get rid of it. Sorry.

My first look at the full bloom of this cactus blossom, at 5:30 am. If you look at the progression of images from the first sprout of the stem and bud to this one, you'll see that it is an amazing transformation in a very short number of hours. The remaining images concentrate on the macro views of the pistils and pollen, with the bees discovering this feast just minutes away. The full set shows the progression, with many more macro images to come.
