Gardening remedies- natural suggestions?

I am going to be starting a garden. I was wondering if anyone new of some natural gardening tips for repelling bugs, creating fertilizers, and anything else you can think of that helped your garden grow! Thank you.

For soil the best kind is that dark black moist soil that you find by rivers and lakes. I know a totally green way to get rid of aphids though. You put about 2 drops of dishwashing detergent and spray it on and under the leaves of the plant. Avoid the flowers and spray the top of the soil with a little too. But you only want to do this on affected plants.

A bit lacking in inspiration and opportunity for today's pic. I did take some more photos of parasitised aphids, but they didn't look much different from the one I put on Flickr recently... so one of my garden chairs it was... and then I fiddled with it in photoshop. The resulting image reminds me of the picture on a tea tray that my gran had when I was a child.

The herb garden area is romping away in the better weather, with lots of lush new growth and plenty of self-seeded aquilegia.
