Do plum blossoms Herald the coming of Cherry Blossom season in Japan?

Trying to determine Cherry Blossom time here in Japan Chiba Ken /Tokyo and perhaps a trip to Kyoto for the same. I know the south blooms before the north. Judging by the web forecasts it looks like it might be towards the end of this month. But I see a tree in bloom with dark pink blossoms out my window in the near by park, and I am wondering if that is a plum blossom... Thanks!
Oh Thank you that is very hepful! See you under the cherry blossoms!

Yes, Plum Trees bloom before Cherry Trees though there are some earlier blooming cherry trees types like the ones at the entrance to Ueno Park.

The way to tell is if the blossoms have a scent. Plum blossoms have a scent but cherry blossoms do not. Also plum blossoms (ume) are smaller and aren't as dense on the tree ie they don't cover the branches the way the thicker cherry blossoms do.

As for the standard cherry blossoms - somei yoshino - they're supposedly due out in Tokyo around last week of March but this could change.

These flowers are blossoming in October, which is very rare here in Norway. They ought to be dead by now...
