What problems are associated with algae blooms?

Too much nitrogen in the waters of Long Island Sound (or any body of water) can cause excessive algae growths called blooms.

The nitrogen often is carried from over-fertilized fields (manure, synthetic fertilizer) into rivers and then into the oceans.

Algal blooms can use up a lot of other nutrients, killing off other organisms. Also the algae will die, sink and rot whicht will consume oxygen, killing fish and crustateans. Finally, several algae species are toxic and when they occur in large numbers they kill all other life around them.

This Gazani bloom had collected some water droplets which are visible through the transaprent petals. Taken in my garden.
