Now I know it is called Milkweed, just a weed :)

more info sent by Amanda ( www.flickr.com/photos/narilia , many thanks)
this specie is "Antelope Horns":
Scientific Name: Asclepias asperula
Definition: One of the Milkweed Family (Asclepiadaceae), Antelope Horns are a low upright to sprawling perenial growing 8-24". Usually several, stout, unbranched stems from base. Flower is about 1" long, a pale, greenish yellow with 5 deep lobes which are erect and cupped. The flowers crowd and cluster at the top of the stem forming a rounded oval at the end of the stem. Plant is usually considered poisonous, yet many medicinal herbs are made from it. Blooms March-November. ( www.lone-star.net/mall/txtrails/wildflowers/flower93.html )
It is the only food source of Monarch caterpillars.
Now i do recall it was taken on a Texas wildflower hunting trip in April, 2001.

I went to see these gardens in June 2011. It is open for public, but privately owned and run by former BBC Gardener of the Year.

It is not as big as Ness Gardens run by the University of Liverpool, but what a beautiful place to see. Your eyes are spoilt with beautiful gardens. Gardens that you have in your dreams.

I might go back next year in Spring to see the Bluebell Woods which is adjacent to this place.

Orlando is a very serious Buddhist who belongs to the Soga Gakkai sect that follows the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. Yes he meditates and chants the mantra "Nyam Myoho Renge Kyo" which means " I invoke the power of the Lotus Sutra" -- an important part of Buddhist scripture. He also conducts his life according to the 8th fold path and keeps the 3 jewels of Buddha, Dharma (Buddha's teaching) and Sangha (Buddhist community) as the foremost pillars of his life. He converted both of his girlfriends Kate Bosworth and Miranda Kerr to Buddhism through his own example not by persuasion as they were very inspired by his practices .. and he often hangs out with fellow Buddhist Brad Pitt and Angelina who reads Buddhist scriptures to her son Maddox everyday. He also follows the Dharma Chakra (karmic wheel of justice) and observes good karma in thought, word and deed. (10 pts pls)

Leonardslee Gardens: Woodland Walks

For a few weeks in May of each year, Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex, UK, erupt into a spectacular display of the most amazing color combinations of flowering rhododendrons and azaleas. The green, wooded valley gardens then turn into a place of vibrant colors and outstanding natural beauty. Filled with the scent of the massed azalea plantings the whole area becomes a forest paradise. Visitors have often described its beauty and tranquility as being like 'heaven on earth'.

This photograph shows yellow and salmon pink azaleas lining a woodland path at Leonardslee in late afternoon sunshine.

For many years, tens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the 'picture-postcard' qualities of this Grade 1 historic garden. Unfortunately, the gardens are now closed to the public as they have been sold to an international businessman.

Details: Leonardslee Gardens is a truly outstanding English landscape garden having a Grade 1 Historic Garden status (English Heritage Register). It covers about 240 acres (97 Hectares) in a wooded valley, contains seven lakes and is extensively planted with azaleas, ancient rhododendrons (some well over 100 years old), acers and camellias - all with a delightful under planting of bluebells in spring.

The great Victorian plant collector, Sir Edmund Loder (who gave his name to the large flowered and scented Loderi Rhododendron Hybrids) purchased the estate in 1889 and planted large numbers of Rhododendrons there. Sir Giles Loder later planted an extensive collection of camellias at Leonardslee. The estate remained in the hands of five generations of the Loder family until 2010 when it was sold to an international businessman. However, the Loder Rhododendron nursery was not sold and is still in business.

Location: Leonardslee Gardens, Lower Beeding, Horsham, West Sussex, England, RH13 6PP, UK. UK Map references: OSGB36 Grid ref:: TQ220259: Map tile ref: TQ22NW40

Links: A more detailed history of Leonardslee Gardens is available on Wikipedia. Leonardslee nursery is still run by Chris Loder and his website contains useful information on Rhododendron Loderi, its varieties and hybrids.

A Bakers Dozen Palms and their uses: Enjoy! from an L.A. Born Lakers Fan!
1) Phoenix dactylifera [aka DATE PALM): Date (fruit); Date Wine; ...Date seeds are soaked and ground up for animal feed. Their oil is suitable for use in soap and cosmetics. They can also be processed chemically as a source of oxalic acid. The seeds are also burned to make charcoal for silversmiths, and can be strung in necklaces. Date seeds are also ground and used in the manner of coffee beans, or as an additive to coffee....Stripped fruit clusters are used as brooms. In Pakistan, a viscous, thick syrup made from the ripe fruits is used as a coating for leather bags and pipes to prevent leaking....Date palm sap is used to make palm syrup and numerous edible products derived from the syrup....Date Palm in Coat of arms of Saudi Arabia...Date palm leaves are used for Palm Sunday in the Christian religion. In North Africa, they are commonly used for making huts. Mature leaves are also made into mats, screens, baskets and fans. Processed leaves can be used for insulating board. Dried leaf petioles are a source of cellulose pulp, used for walking sticks, brooms, fishing floats and fuel. Leaf sheaths are prized for their scent, and fibre from them is also used for rope, coarse cloth, and large hats. The leaves are also used as a lulav in the Jewish holiday of Sukkot....Date palm wood is used for posts and rafters for huts; it is lighter than coconut and not very durable. It is also used for construction such as bridges and aqueducts, and parts of dhows. Leftover wood is burnt for fuel....Where craft traditions still thrive, such as in Oman, the palm tree is the most versatile of all indigenous plants, and virtually every part of the tree is utilized to make functional items ranging from rope and baskets to beehives, fishing boats, and traditional dwellings....Dates have a high tannin content and are used medicinally as a detersive (having cleansing power) and astringent in intestinal troubles.[citation needed] As an infusion, decoction, syrup, or paste, dates may be administered for sore throat, colds, bronchial catarrh, and taken to relieve fever and a number of other complaints. One traditional belief is that it can counteract alcohol intoxication. The seed powder is also used in some traditional medicines....A gum that exudes from the wounded trunk is employed in India for treating diarrhea and genito-urinary ailments.[citation needed] The roots are used against toothache. The pollen yields an estrogenic principle, estrone, and has a gonadotropic effect on young rats."

4) RATTAN PALMS
5) BETEL NUTS
6) TODDY PALM (SUGAR PALM)
7) OIL PALM
8) RAFFIA PALMS
9) Food Source for Native Americans & Birds
10) SAGO PALM
11) "The trunk fibres produced by the leaf sheaths of Trachycarpus fortunei are harvested in China
and elsewhere to make coarse but very strong rope, brooms and brushes. This use gives rise to
the old alternative name "Hemp-palm". The fibrous leaf sheaths are also frequently used to
clothe stems of artificial palms."
12) HEARTS OF PALM
13) "The Moriche Palm fruit is edible, has a high vitamin C content, and used to make juice, jam, ice cream, and a fermented "wine". An oil high in vitamin A is extracted from the pulp and is frequently used to treat burns because of its soothing qualities. The inflorescence buds are eaten as a vegetable, and the sap can be drunk fresh or fermented (see palm wine). Threads and cords are locally produced from the tree's fibers. Buriti oil is an orange-reddish oil extracted from the fruit of the Moriche palm. The oil contains high concentrations of oleic acid, tocopherols and carotenoids, especially β-carotene. Recently it has been found to filter and absorb cancer-causing UV rays from the sun."

Organic Gardening Soil - How To Ensure Soil Fertility For Organic Vegetable Gardening?

Looking for an organic gardening book that you can recommend to learn more about pesticide-free gardening.

Garden best answer:

Answer by Cel Z
In organic gardening, soil quality decides vegetable quality. That's why you need good quality compost to keep the soil productive for organic vegetable gardening.

Compost can be made from leaves, dead flowers, vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, grass clippings and manure. The ideal organic soil has a dark color, sweet smell and is full of earthworms. Some soil may need more natural additives such as bonemeal, rock phosphates or greensand. A simple soil test will tell you the pH balance and which nutrients you need to use.

Why won't my wisteria bloom? and Red Rose Blooming

Why won't my wisteria bloom?

I live in south Florida, and have had my wisteria for at least 7 years. When the hurricanes hit in 2004, my wisteria was cut all the way back (it was only like a year old or so then). It is very healthy, great foliage and strong vines. It just does not bloom, never has! I was worried because of the zone I am in (9-10), but I have seen blooming wisteria around here. I have heard it may take 8-10 yrs to bloom. I have also heard that I should prune it. But, when you go up north Florida, like Gainesville area, you see it growing wild high up in trees. I know that is not pruned. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

bloom best answer:

Answer by Sandy G
Wisterias are weeds and will take over if you are not careful. They can destroy houses and outdoor structures if not kept in check. They flower on the previous year's growth, so they benefit from a hard pruning in the early summer, then allow them to grow over the summer. Trim back the new growth in the late summer to keep it under control, but don't remove all the new growth. They can take several years to start flowering, but 7 years seems like a long time with no flowers at all. They like strong sunshine and do not need any fertilizer.

Some wisterias will just never bloom...they are sterile plants and nothing you do will get them to flower.

Why are the night-blooming flowers white in color ?

Generally, it is found that night-blooming flowers are white or less colorful. Why are they so?

bloom best answer:

Answer by Chuckney
They are less colourful because they cannot be seen so well, so colours would not attract pollinators as teh colours of daybloomers do.

I'd say they are often white because white stands out best in the dark, so is best for attracting creatures. Night bloomers such as jasmine as also quote often scented for the same reason, they rely on this rather than colour to be pollinated.

Agave and Century Plants - the same thing? and Hordeum vulgare (6 row barley)

Agave and Century Plants - the same thing?

Wikipedia says that agave and century plants are the same plant, called by a different name. However, the picture doesn't look like a century plant. Is there more than one kind of century plant, or is it a different veriety of agave? Are these two plants the same thing?

inflorescence best answer:

Answer by Lea
Apparently 'Century Plant' is a broad term for all genus and species of Agave plant so that even if the species looks different, they are all 'century plants'

inflorescence

Hordeum vulgare (6 row barley)
inflorescence

The inflorescence of six row barley includes three rows of seed bearing florets on each side (corresponding the three spikelets per node and spikelets alternating along opposite sides of the rachis). Note the aborted awns on the lower portion of one row of florets, which suggests the beardless (awnless) cultivar.
