What is the national flower of Mali, West Africa?

Or if there is a specific flower associated with Timbuktu?

flower best answer:

Answer by Vobird
Mali has no official flower.

As Timbuktu is a desert area, there is no flower that is really associated with it. The most involvement I've heard about coming from a flower is the flower of the African hemp plant, of which they smoke.

Do new rose bushes bloom their first year? and Gilsland Peony Single Bloom

Do new rose bushes bloom their first year?

A few months ago I planted a rose bush in my yard that I had picked up from Walmart. It is exhibiting signs of healthy growth but I've yet to see any actual budding/blooming from it. Is this usual for a newly planted bush not to flower in the first year?

bloom best answer:

Answer by oil field trash
It is very rare for a rose to not bloom in its first year. In fact if you prune the blooms after then are spent, you will get additional blooms all summer and into fall.

There are many sites on the net that give you help like the ones below.

Gilsland Peony Single Bloom

Garden peonies are herbaceous perennials (height 20 to 36 inches) grouped into five types according to flower shape: single, semidouble, double, Japanese, and anemone. Tree peonies produce large numbers of flowers on a shrub-like plant; the stems do not die back each year.

I live in texas and my grandiflora has never bloomed?

I have a 20 year old grandiflora magnolia tree and it has never bloomed. what can i do?

bloom best answer:

Answer by Cowboy's Sweetheart
It's not uncommom for magnolias to take 20 years to bloom, especially if it was started from seed. It may start blooming any time now. They also won't bloom if they are in shade. I know you have a lot of clay soil in Texas. Clay soil is very compacted and the roots may not be able to expand. It is not making flowers because it is struggling to stay alive. If the tree is growing in clay till the area around the roots to loosen the soil.

How do I get my calendiva to produce more blooms?

I already cut off the spent blooms...is this wrong?

bloom best answer:

Answer by reynwater
Nope, it's fine to deadhead. Kalanchoes can bloom twice in a season. Try bloom booster (miracle gro product) but it may be a few months before you get a second bloom, they need the rest.

You can start cuttings in water or directly in dirt. Have fun!

Phytoplankton Bloom in the North Atlantic [Detail]
bloom

NASA image acquired May 22, 2010

Late May 2010 brought peacock-hued swirls of blue and green to the North Atlantic. The iridescent waters formed a giant arc hundreds of kilometers across, extending from west of Ireland to the Bay of Biscay. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured this natural-color image on May 22, 2010. The vibrant colors are from tiny organisms, phytoplankton, that grow explosively in the North Atlantic—from Iceland to the shores of France—in the spring and summer.

Phytoplankton require nutrients to reproduce, and phytoplankton blooms are often tied to events that bring nutrients to the ocean surface, such as dust plumes. Volcanic ash can also contribute nutrients for phytoplankton blooms. Researchers from the University of Hamburg's Institute of Geophysics found that a 2008 eruption of the Kasotochi Volcano in the Aleutian Islands generated a massive phytoplankton bloom in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. They concluded that iron-rich ash falling on waters that are otherwise poor in iron can create conditions in which phytoplankton thrive.

MODIS acquired this image after weeks of eruptive activity at Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. Considering that ash plumes from that volcano closed airspace over much of Europe, one might wonder whether ash provided fertilizer for this bloom. In this case, the answer is probably no. The North Atlantic Ocean already contains plenty of iron, and these waters experience massive phytoplankton blooms every spring and summer.

Half of my daffodils and Tulips are not blooming? and Blooming......buds

Half of my daffodils and Tulips are not blooming?

Okay very strange. This year The daffodils in the front yard bloomed and the daffodils in the back yard just leaves with no blooms. The Tulips in the back yard bloomed and the tulips in the front yard just the green leaves. Very strange. Why is this happening? I'm in zone 5 in the North east.

bloom best answer:

Answer by sciencegravy
Hard to say - but the most common reason for non-blooming tulips and daffodils is that last year, after they bloomed, the leaves were braided, folded, mowed, or cut back while still green. if that was the case, then they didn't get to gather enough energy to form this year's flower. Let them be this year, and they should bloom next year.

Tulips, especially the big fancy ones, don't bloom forever and tend to peter out after a few years, but it's usually gradual, not abrupt. Also, that's usually not the case with daffodils, which perform much longer, and often even spread. So I don't think that's the issue for your flowers this year.

Any ideas on how to make a Hydrangea bloom? and A rose's bloom

Any ideas on how to make a Hydrangea bloom?

It is in part sun/ part shade. It looks happy where it is. The foliage looks very healthy but, no blooms.. How do I make it bloom?

bloom best answer:

Answer by Amy L
Hydrangeas require full sun and adequate moisture for best bloom. If you are meeting these needs, the only other obvious cause for lack of bloom is improperly timed pruning. Prune the plants immediately after bloom, so that new growth will be able to develop flower buds in the fall. Pruning in the spring or early summer removes the fall developed flower buds, preventing bloom for that year.

Bigleaf hydrangea responds to several light applications of fertilizer during the growing season. A general-purpose fertilizer, such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 applied at a rate of one pound (2 cups) per 100 square feet in March, May and July is suggested. It is not necessary to remove the mulch when fertilizing, but water soon after application to help dissolve the fertilizer and send it into the soil.

Do Rhododendrons bloom twice a year in the Pacific Northwest?

My Rhododendrons look like they are getting new buds for a second bloom

bloom best answer:

Answer by ?
Sometimes, but it's not normal.

They may indeed bloom since this has been a crazy year for weather. The Rhodie's might be more confused then we are.

Secondly, they do set buds for the next year very early, right after they're finished blooming from last year. You might just be seeing the buds that will bloom in the spring.

Did you prune it during the winter? Maybe the pot is too small for the root system. Sounds like you should call the local nursery or county extension agent.

I use to work for the florist and when you send flowers through FTD the flowers are sent to a local florist and they get the arrangement put together and either they send out the flowers through their local delivery or through a shipping company that does same day deliveries. There is no need to worry that they flowers will get messed up. That or you call a local florist and make the arrangements directly with them. This will save you a bit of $ $ from not having to pay a fee for the FTD service.

No concrete dates as such yet.

According to the author's website :

And coming in 2010:

SIMON BLOOM: THE ORDER OF CHAOS

What's it about? What does that title mean? What will the cover look like? Will Simon have new sneakers in this picture, too?

All I'll tell you is that the story continues what's been happening in books 1 & 2, involves a visit to the Order of Chemistry, and has a guy named Simon Bloom in it.

Oh, and Of Course, The Narrator is back. Duh. (I mean, seriously...who else is going to tell the story? Michael Reisman?)

http://michaelreisman.com/index.php?page=books

His blog offers the same news :

(I've also Narrated a third Chronicle of Simon Bloom and his friends. Michael Reisman, the so-called author of the book version of Simon's adventures, is doing more of that revising stuff he does to my historical records. The new Chronicle, by the way, is tentatively titled SIMON BLOOM: THE ORDER OF CHAOS, and it should be ready for you...yes, You...to read in 2010.)

Last year's growth, mostly, in my experience. So if you are trimming it for shape do it after it blooms and then be patient so it has the right age wood the next spring to bloom - I have trimmed it late in the summer and had almost no blooms the following fall, so you may need to continue to trim up the entire thing to get regular blooms - they are vigorous, though.

Professor Rao presents evidence that hebanon is yew: "In all probability, hebenon is yew. Yew is closely associated with death, grown in churchyards and cemeteries. It is poisonous, especially after the twigs and leaves are left to ferment for some time. It is a "distilment" that is referred to and so we may not be far wrong in assuming that hebenon, as employed in the passage, means the yew. Yew is Taxus baccata of the conifers."[1].

Do Loropetalum bloom on new wood, old wood, 1 yr old wood, both, or what?

I would like to espaliate one on a trellis, curious if I'll get consistent blooms across the plant or not. Thanks.

Are artificial flowers ok for a wedding?

My step mother is having a fit because I am using artificial flowers for my wedding. My fiancee and I are over 35 and are not looking to spend tons of money on certain items...flowers being one of them. Also, I want to keep my bouquet which is another reason I chose artificial. We're not talking a huge elaborate wedding. Its relatively small..under 100 people. Am I being politically incorrect?

How many times per year should a Night Blooming Cereus bloom?

I transplanted a Night Blooming Cereus 2 years ago. This late July, it produced it's first awe inspiring bloom. It now has a second bud, 2 months later. I had heard that they only bloomed once annualy.
I am really asking how unusual it is for a second blossom to appear 2 months after the first bloom.
Thanks to all your contributions, I found a fairly comrehensive site for these plants: http://www.ecology.org/orchids/index5.html#selenicereus

The plant I have is most likely Hylocereus Undatus, or Hylocereus Costaricensis, and in Hawail, are reported to bloom through the 'summer months', several times. Too bad we cannot upload photos here for comparisons. (hint, hint!)
I live in San Diego, CA

Once, in the summer.

"One of the strangest plants of the desert, the Night-bloomiing Cereus is a member of the Cactus Family that resembles nothing more than a dead bush most of the year. It is rarely seen in the wild because of its inconspicuousness. But for one midsummer's night each year, its exqusitely scented flower opens as night falls, then closes forever with the first rays of the morning sun."

How can I make my orchids bloom again?

I buy these beautiful Phalaenopsis orchids, and even though they are long lasting, they don't bloom again.

You should look into the amount of light your plant is getting. Place it near a west window or a bright location where it doesn't get direct sun. Also, feed it a balanced fertilizer every time you water, mixing half of the recommended amount of fertilizer to make sure it's well diluted. Drain well after watering as the roots do not tolerate sitting in water. Keep the potting medium (wood bark or moss) humid but not wet. After the plant is finished blooming and the spike is dry, cut the spike and place the plant in a dark location for around one month to stimulate blooming when the plant is brought back into a bright spot.

The pictures you provided aren't exactly the best, I can tell you that the first picture is of a White Daisy, This is the generic name, I'm not sure of the exact species due to the poor picture quality.
For the Second photo the first flower is a pansy. Again I'm not positive which species it is. The other 2 flowers I can't even tell what they are, are these flowers pressed? It's hard to tell when main characteristics of a flower isn't obvious.

Can I do something to get my lilac bush to bloom?

There is a large (8 foot) lilac bush in my yard that was there when we moved in about a year ago. There are no blooms on it, even when our neighbors tree is in full bloom. Is there anything I can try to get it to bloom?

bloom best answer:

Answer by bostonterriersamericangentleman
They usually bloom in Spring. If yours did not bloom it needs to be pruned. Cut it back and it should bloom for you next Spring. You can give it some plant food as well. The easiest is the Miracle Grow Shake n Feed. That will go down into the roots with rain and snow.
