why aren't my calla lilies blooming?

bloom best answer:

Answer by Mike
It might not be getting enough sunlight, calla lilies can abort flowers if they aren't getting enough light. They need part-shade mid-day but can get direct light the rest of the day. Slowly acclimate it to more direct light if it isn't getting any right now so it doesn't burn the foliage.

How can i get my peace lily to bloom?

Right after I bought it a few months ago it bloomed Ans it hasn't since. Am I not watering enough? Or not giving it enough sun?

bloom best answer:

Answer by rachel collins
Main key do not over water...is it outside or inside...if inside makesure its near a window if outside you don't want it to scorch...sometimes when you buy things such as Lillie's they were pushed to bloom in the. Nersury....so you shouldn't buy plants that have blooms all over it...cut off dead blooms so your plant can focus on new growth give it alittle Miracle grow and wait.....I hate to say it but sometimes lilies only produce a certain number of blooms then their done....sorry

La Flor de la Pasión - HAY QUE VIVIR!!! / The Flower Of Passion
flower

y volver a respirar.

Quitarles centinelas
al parque y a la escuela,
columpios y sonrisas volarán.

Sentirse libre y suficiente
al cierzo y al relente
mientras se va dorando el pan.

Hay que vivir, amigo mío
antes que nada hay que vivir
y ya va haciendo frío.
Hay que burlar ese futuro
que empieza a hacerse muro en ti.

Habrá que demoler barreras
crear nuevas maneras
y alzar otra verdad.

Desempolvar viejas creencias
que hablaban en esencia
sobre la simplicidad.

Darles a nuestros hijos
el credo y el hechizo
del alba y el rescoldo en el hogar.

Y si aún nos queda algo de tiempo
poner la cara al viento
y aventurarnos a soñar.

Hay que vivir, amigo mío
antes que nada hay que vivir
y ya va haciendo frío.
Hay que burlar ese futuro
que empieza a hacerse muro en ti.

"Ceanothus...is a genus of about 50–60 species of shrubs or small trees in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae. The genus is confined to North America, the center of its distribution in California, with some species (e.g. C. americanus) in the eastern United States and southeast Canada, and others (e.g. C. coeruleus) extending as far south as Guatemala. Most are shrubs 0.5–3 m tall, but C. arboreus and C. thyrsiflorus, both from California, can be small trees up to 6–7 m tall." (Wikipedia)

How to paste nice flowering plants in a herbarium sheet?

I am supposed to collect a dicotyledonous angiosperm and a monocotyledonous angiosperm. I am thinking of pasting an inflorescence of Tagetes patula for the dicot species. So, I wanna know some tips to do this work fine and smoothly.
How do I paste the flower flat? Do I have to preserve and press the inflorescences (like under a heavy weight) for some weeks and wait for the chlorophyll of the leaves to fade a little? What's the ideal length and breadth of a herbarium sheet? What info should it contain?
I need to know how to make a perfect herbarium sheet.

Thanks in advance for your help!

inflorescence best answer:

Answer by mick
Here's some tips:
-To carry the plants you collect, put them in sealed plastic bags. The air trapped inside the bag will prevent your plant from being squashed. Keep them shaded from the sun. On particularly hot days, put a damp paper towel in the bag, that will help keep them fresh until you get home. Label the plants the moment you collect them. As soon as you get back home put them to dry between paper sheets and under a weight. Change the sheets every day until the plants are completely dry.
-Your sample should have all the parts of the plant, not just the flowers. Small plants should be collected whole, including the roots. If they are too big, like bushes or trees, it's ok to just collect a small branch but make sure you pick one with both leaves and flowers.
-Herbarium specimens should not be glued to the sheets but held down with strips of paper and pins. This way, if necessary, the specimen can be removed to be examined, and then re-attached to the sheet.
-There is no standard size for herbarium sheets. Some institutions require a certain size but this may vary from place to place. The bigger the better, but the ideal size actually depends on the size of the shelves or boxes were the specimens are to be kept.

The label should contain:
-place and date of collection (where and when you found the plant)
-other info on the place (elevation, habitat, and so on)
-name of collector (you)
once the plant is identified you can add
-plant's scientific name
-name of person who identified it

For more detailed instructions google: "herbarium specimen preparation" and you will find many helpful sites.

"Eriogonum umbellatum is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common name sulphurflower buckwheat, or simply sulphur flower. It is native to western North America from California to Colorado to central Canada, where it is abundant and found in many habitats. This is an extremely variable plant and hard to identify because individuals can look very different from one another. Also, there are a great many varieties. It may be a perennial herb forming a small clump with flowers to 10 centimeters tall, or a sprawling shrub approaching two meters high and wide. The leaves are usually woolly and low on the plant, and the flowers come in many colors from white to bright yellow to purple. Native American groups utilized parts of this plant for a number of medicinal uses." (Wikipedia)

These are potato flowers, Solanum tuberosum, in a garden in rural Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. This is the potato that french fries are made from, etc. Although it is possible to grow new plants from seed, almost all potatoes are cloned from the underground stem, or tuber (the part we eat). The flowers are about 1/2 inch/1 dm across. Note the 5-fold symmetry of the fused petals, also the anthers. (The stigmas seem to be 3-parted.)

Larger sizes can be seen.

Do you think they'll bloom? and New Blooms Pyramid

Do you think they'll bloom?

Ok, I planted my brand new irises this past September. Over the winter, some weird kind of weed invaded (it's been a warm winter) and they started to choke out my irises. So I moved them. I have 7 in a small round bed, and 6 in another bed. I tried my best to keep all the roots intact. As an added bonus, there's been a steady rain for the past 2 days since they've been planted. the reason i ask is because i read online that sometimes you won't get blooms out of irises the 1st spring, so I'm wondering if moving them would make any difference.

bloom best answer:

Answer by susan q
moving irises is like telling them to wait another year to bloom. I love them, and from my experiences, I have found that they take as long as three years to produce their first bloom.

"Bomarea is one of the two major genera in the plant family Alstroemeriaceae. Most occur in the Andes. Several species are occasionally found as garden plants.

"It is essentially a twining version of their relatives in Alstroemeria, though some species stand freely upright.

Perhaps the most fascinating — and telltale — morphological trait of most if not all Alstroemeriaceae is the fact that the leaves are resupinate: they twist from the base so that what appears to be the upper leaf surface is in fact the lower leaf surface." (Wikipedia)

hmmm, I have a night bloom cereus blooming now in zone 8-9. The flower buds begin to open around 9-10pm, peak about 12-1, and are withered with the sunrise. Lots of flowers only last a day or less: 4-oclocks, hibiscus, daylillies, but they have a long bloom period. Can you give a more detailed description?

A few years ago I was lucky to find a beautiful weed in my rock garden, a pink oxalis wildflower which is actually a weed. That photo is one of the most viewed photos I've ever taken, seen here. No flowers bloomed last year in the same place, but this week I was delighted to find a sister plant in the very same spot, hurrah! This tiny flower measures only 3/4" across. Ironically, my Canon 40D with 100 mm EF macro lens did not do as well as my old, trusty point and shoot camera. This shot was taken with a Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1.

Preventing berry production on tree.?

In the front yard of my house is a variation of a Japanese Privet, Ligustrum Lucidum to be precise, that produces large clusters of tiny purple berries in the fall. These berries are juicy and stick to everything and stain everything and drop by the hundreds every few hours. A real nuisance. I've heard there is an injection that can be administered pre-production of these berries that prevents their growth altogether. However, neither the association I live in, nor the city is being forthcoming with information or assistance. Are there any DIY remedies to this or third party services?

inflorescence best answer:

Answer by topaz
I was able to find this http://joa.isa-arbor.com/request.asp?JournalID=1&ArticleID=1798&Type=2 which is a study to prevent flowering an fruiting of glossy privet in California, three of which were effective, but two of these are no longer available because of their toxicity.

This may be something for which you would need to consult a professional arborist. Other options, since these are on your property, might be to remove the plants entirely (these are considered an invasive species http://www.invasiveplantatlas.org/subject.html?sub=5942 ), or at least remove what immature inflorescences you can before they open and are pollinated.

"Lobelia (pronounced /lɵˈbiːliə/)[1] is a genus of flowering plant comprising 360–400 species, with a subcosmopolitan distribution primarily in tropical to warm temperate regions of the world, a few species extending into cooler temperate regions.[2] English names include Lobelia, Asthma Weed, Indian Tobacco, Pukeweed, and Vomitwort.

"Some botanists place the genus and its relatives in the separate family Lobeliaceae, others as a subfamily Lobelioideae within the Campanulaceae. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group did not make a firm decision in this, listing the genus under both families.

Carnations are very affordable, pretty, and available in all the colors you mention.

APG I and II scientific classification?

What's the diff between APG I and II?

What system is wiki using?

According to them, Angiospermae goes into "Plantae Kingdom"? What about Spermatophyta and Cormophyta in between? Or are they available nevertheless as APG only refers to angiosperms?

Could you please give me an example on a specific genus, like Helianthus(whole classification, from family to kingdom)?

inflorescence best answer:

Answer by Harshal
Kindly click on the links below to learn about APG system of classification of Angiosperms .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angiosperm_Phylogeny_Group

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APG_system

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APG_II_system

Cormophyta is the term in older classifications .It is not used now .
http://www.biology-online.org/dictionary/Cormophyta
http://www.thebiotechdictionary.com/term/cormophyta

Spermatophyta is a larger group of Angiosperms and Gymnosperms put together .

APG I & II do not deal with Gymnosperms . Only Angiosperms .

click for what wiki says for Spermatophyta =

Classification of Helianthus

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Plantae

(unranked): Angiosperms

(unranked): Eudicots ( True Dicots )

(unranked): Asterids ( Inferior ovary )

Order: Asterales ( Capitulum inflowrescence )

Family: Asteraceae ( Only one family in Asterales )

Subfamily: Helianthoideae

Tribe: Heliantheae

Genus: Helianthus
L.

- EDIT-

In order to make you understand the different groups that you have mentioned in your question . I make use of Sir Bentham & Sir Hooker's classification method (1800 to 1914 )that was in use throughout the British empire not in too distant past.

I ) Classification of Helianthus annus ( The common or annual sunflower plant )

Kingdom – Plantae ( All the plants in the world )

Division – Spermatophyta ( The seed producing plants only )

****( This Division includes sub division Angiospermae & sub division Gymnospermae as both of them are SEED BEARING plants ).

Sub-Division- Angiospermae – ( These are all seed bearing plants no doubt but they are also fruit bearing plants as the OVULES are enclosed inside an OVARY;and after fertilization ovules are turned in to seeds and the ovary becomes a fruit . THIS FEATURE IS TOTALLY LACKING IN GYMNOSPERMS )

Class- Dicotyledonae – Two cotyledons in the seed . Reticulate venation on the leaves ( Mostly ) and pentamerous or tetramerous symmetry in the floral parts (i.e.floral parts are 5 or 4 or in multiple thereof .

Sub-Class – Gamopetalae – ( Petals are always fused . that means corolla is Gamopetalous )

Series – Inferae OR Epigynae – ( Ovary is always inferior )

Order Or Cohort Asterales – ( These are mostly herbs . Flowers are in Capitulum inflorescence

Family – Asteraceae ( Only one family in that order )

Genus – Helianthus ( The common , Sun orienting , sun flower )

Species – Helanthus annus – The annual sunflower.
