do cannas' bloom multiple times in the summer or do they need to be trimmed

They produce a sort of flower spike, like a gladiola, and yeah, after it goes by trim it. I will say that mine do much better in the ground than in a pot. They can take a beating and after a few days of sunshine they look great all over with little attention.
