Calendula officinalis has a clasping leaf attachment. The leaf partially encircles the stem. The leaf attachment points spiral around the length of the stem. The leaves are slightly hairy and oblong.
The inflorescence is radially symmetric. The bracts at the base of the flower are narrow green & leafy. They have two 'petal' types the surrounding ray florets and the central disc florets. The petals give both color and flavor, similar to saffron, to food.
