Why are pineapples so prickly? and Yellow beauty

Why are pineapples so prickly?

Pineapples have spikes on them. Is there a reason for it or no?

Its their natural defense mechanism. Its to deter animal predators from tearing into them for the the liquid inside to keep from dehydrating them. Without the prickly skin they would've probably gone into extinction hundreds of years ago.

Yellow beauty
inflorescence

This is an inflorescence, not a single flower, of a plant from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Each yellow 'petal' is a ray flower and the middle of the inflorescence is made up of disc flowers. See notes on the image for more details.
