Gladiolas, After it has flowered, what is the bulbuous growth that forms at the flower base?



As the blooms have shriveled up, I have been removing them. Now I have noticed a bulbous growth where the flower had been. What is going on?

Many plants that we think of as just bulbs also produce seeds. That is what has got to be below your spent blooms. It just takes longer for Gladiola to bloom from seed rather than from a bulb dividion.
